• Cosmetic Dentistry: It’s About More Than Just Teeth

Cosmetic dentistry treatments allow many different aspects of the teeth to be modified aesthetically- or, in non-dental terms: made to look better, even ‘more beautiful’. These treatments may include the shape and size of the teeth, their arrangement, and obviously, their color.

It’s vital to realise that ‘beauty is in the eye of the beholder’: while most people find a bright, even smile extremely attractive, many people are just as gorgeous with teeth that are not perfect in their arrangement or shape. On some faces, a ‘character smile ‘ (one that has slight imperfections) looks much more natural and interesting than a porcelain-white, perfectly-even smile.

It’s fascinating to realize that what’s considered an attractive smile can often change over time. In the 1940s, many individuals considered a gorgeous smile to have small, uniformly shaped teeth that were almost all the same size. In modern times, we often prefer the more natural appearance of bigger central incisors, smaller lateral incisors, and slightly pointier canine teeth.

The ‘beauty’ of a person’s teeth is frequently extremely gender-specific. Typically, an engaging female smile contains teeth that have rounded corners. An attractive manly grin frequently contains teeth that are more square in appearance.

A person’s facial structure will often dictate what looks best as far as their teeth are concerned. If an individual has a long, thin face then longer, thinner teeth frequently look better than shorter squatter ones. If a person’s lips part into a wide, almost ear-to-ear smile, then very large teeth look better than smaller ones.

A person’s skin tone will usually affect the shade of their teeth. Teeth needn’t be off-the-chart white to appear bright if the person’s skin tone is darker. Even the lipstick a woman selects can either intensify or camoflage the yellow tones of her teeth!

Cosmetic dentistry is not just a treatment: it’s an art. The entire person should be considered when redesigning or renewing a smile.
